At its simplest, a URL consists of:
- the protocol
- http://www.example.com
and
- the website's domain name
- http://www.example.com
A URL can also include:
- a directory or directories
- http://www.example.com/folder/file.txt
and
- a file name
- http://www.example.com/folder/file.txt
