Globalization of the Printing Industry
Years ago, the printing industry was a regional and local industry. In many cases you could not even speak of an industry. Local printers were serving local customers. Business was often based on good relations with customers. Nowadays the situation is different.
Of course we still have local printers who only serve local customers. But we also have printers who want to print for foreign customers. The modern technologies like internet, digitalisation of information and modern communication make it possible that distances between customers and printers are becoming smaller and smaller. Distance is not an issue anymore. The world is becoming the market of many printers, especially in Asia.
Asia has some advantages compared to Europe or the US. Costs for labour are much lower and becomes an important factor. Before quality of the printed matter was the main issue. There was no guarantee that printed matter produced in Asia could meet the quality standards of European or US customers. Only a few were able to do so. That was the main reason for many foreign customers to stick to their own region. Now these barriers are disappearing very quickly. It is a known fact that the quality of Asian printers can meet foreign requirements and more and more foreign customers are looking for possibilities abroad. But that also means that the competition for Asian printers becomes bigger. They do not only face competition from their fellow printers in their own country but also from outside their own country. As an example: Printers in countries like the Philippines have to face competition from China. Jobs which were printed in the Philippines before are now printed in China. This example is not only a Philippine example but also can be seen in other countries in the region.
The question now is: how can printing companies survive in a more international and more competitive market? [1]
