I began doing web design several years ago and noticed two, unavoidable facts of the business: A. jobs went to the better salesman, not necessarily the better designer and B. there were a whole lot of designers out there that could do a much better job than I could. Since I'm not really that good of a salesman, that meant I got very few design jobs. So I backed off on designing and focused on other areas, mainly scripting.

But as I worked on site after site, some with good designs, some with bad, I began to see the patterns and concepts used by the better designers and ignored by the bad ones. So I began doing a few re-designs of my own sites, which led to a few smaller jobs and eventually some noteworthy re-designs that brought attention to me as a designer people should take note of. I'm still a terrible salesman, and I'll be the first to admit there are still lots of designers out there that are much better than I am (see why I'm a terrible salesman? I'm way too honest), but designing some prominent sites has allowed me to overcome the problem of lack of salesmanship, and my designs are good enough that people like what I can do.
