It is a good rule of thumb to look for a pre-flop reason to fold when you are in one of the first three positions to act and look for a reason to call when you are in one of the last three.
The fact is you need a really good hand to call from an early position. QJ is an easily dominated hand. Had the flop come Q-high, where were you and your position has you having to lead the betting. With a gutshot draw you'd need a pot that was laying you better than 7:1 to even continue play and with others to act it get even dicer. Again, that is what early position does.
You don't say what the players contesting the pot were like. But you've still got no real part of the flop. So even if that were more positive there'd be little incentive to continue--even from late position. Had that 8 been a 9 giving you a straight draw you'd still want about 5:1 odds for it to be EV neutral. And, others are still to act so you aren't ever going to be assured of that.
