What (summary)
This feature goes along with Skinterface for trees as steps toward creating the TotalCommunityPackage.
A set of pages in AboutUs can be magically mapped to a different domain name. This affords people who wish to make a wiki a way to do it within AboutUs. These "trees" make use of common articles, patrolling and other amenities which we provide while maintaining their domain name.
Why this is important
We love builders who create communities worth having. Supporting their work is an end in-and-of itself. They are the sorts of folks we most want to attract to and retain at AboutUs.
Builders are often already committed to one or more online communities. Their community websites establish group identity, focus on particular topics, and are customized to provide the most appropriate user experience for their members. If we can support such builders in an ecosystem that interconnects their communities to their mutual benefit, the surplus creativity and energy will in turn nurture the commons and support our further growth.
DoneDone
- "solseed.net/PAGENAME" provides view, edit, and all other wiki capabilities as if it were really "aboutus.org/tree/solseed.net/PAGENAME"
- "aboutus.org/tree/solseed.net/PAGENAME" redirects to "solseed.net/PAGENAME"
- aboutus.org/Special:Tree provides an easy way to create a tree for a domain name
- redirects the aboutus.org/tree/DOMAINNAME/* to DOMAINNAME/*
- serves requests for DOMAINNAME/* as if it were aboutus.org/tree/DOMAINNAME
- serves requests for DOMAINNAME/commons/* as if it were aboutus.org/*
- The owner of DOMAINAME will need to point the DNS at our .230 address
- BONUS: Make DOMAINNAME/RecentChanges show a filtered version of RecentChanges that shows only changes to pages within the tree and to pages that are one link out
