Why Build A Portal?

Portals are useful for organizing information about topics that have wide ranging components. For example, a Wine portal may seek to organize information by regions or by varieties or by production methods or combine all those components and provide a window into each one. The portal page itself is both the organizer and the window into all these components.

Creating and maintaining a portal requires a certain dedication to the task and should not be taken lightly. The ideal portal should attract like minded users to create a community that contributes and shares the upkeep and tending of the portal. On the other hand, portals that fall into disuse or are clearly abandoned will be removed

Building the Content

A good portal should lay out on a single page the whole scope and sweep of a topic with only clues to the detail contained in the linked pages. A good design includes use of images and color to highlight each section, short evocative descriptions and use of the more... teaser to get users to explore.

Creating a portal framework is easy, just follow the instructions below. Once you have the framework created the task of creating content needs to be carefully considered. The following steps are suggested:

  • Decide what content area should be in each box
  • Add or remove boxes as necessary
  • Rename the box titles and page names to reflect the content
  • Change the box colors if necessary
  • Click on the red links to create the content for each box
  • Fill each box with short descriptions, images, links and teasers to give visitors reason to dig deeper into your content
  • Create your content pages from the links in each box
  • Plan for some of the upper boxes to contain changing information like featured people or product reviews to keep the page fresh
  • Add internal and external links as you find them and as you create new content

Building the Framework

  • Type the name of the portal after the word "Portal:". (Do Not Add "Portal" to the end of the name!)
  • Click the "Search/Create" button. (This will create a portal with the same blue color scheme as this page - Click here for other color options)
  • Add content your portal!
