How to become a featured wiki page
Nominating wiki articles (which could be about websites, users, portal pages or any non-domain specific page) to be featured on AboutUs is a simple process:
- Just polish up an article page. Pointers and tips can be found here: How to improve website pages and Adding and working with pictures.
- Add the following code into the article at the bottom of the page (just before the "Related Domains" section): {{subst:FeatureMe}}
That's it. Any problems, please ContactUs. We'll help you through the process.
How it works
The {{subst:FeatureMe}} tag allows the AboutUs community to find and comment on these article pages.
The idea with the nomination system is to generate discussion about a specific wiki article page and to provide pointers to help users polish their pages with the hopes of becoming a Featured article. We'll be reviewing these discussions and featuring pages as we go. Of course, this isn't a perfect science, so some sites might get a general "go ahead" from the community and not get featured for awhile. Other sites might get featured sooner. While we can't necessarily feature every single page, we will get to as many as we can. If you feel your site's been languishing in a "ready state" for a while, just hold on and know that if you've created a great wiki page we'll find it eventually.
Community discussion points
Notes from the community should be constructive with the ultimate goal of not necessarily creating a site that is going to be Featured, but the goal of creating a dynamite page with great value to the community.
These notes might be:
- Great! Looks like a promising Featured page
- Looks good, but could use some work. Here's some pointers...
And so on. For a list of wiki pages currently under-discussion, see FeatureMePotentials
General tips for polishing your page
Here are some elements of a great wiki article your page might want to incorporate:
- a logo
- a couple of other images (product photos, screen shots or related art)
- background history on the website
- description of the site
You can also view the Archive of Featured Sites to see what types of site we've previously featured.
Add your thoughts to nominated pages
Community members are welcome to look at various pages that have been nominated and leave notes in the discussion on the worthiness of the nomination. Please keep comments constructive, eg. "Wow, this is great, how about adding a screenshot to really top it off," or "I love what you did with the testimonials. Great page!"
While the list of potential featured sites is broken down by month, feel free to comment on any actively discussed nominees.
Discussion
It would be a much easier if you created a directory instead of a long list of sites. That way users can find the site that is most relevent. i.e. findamob.com would be listed in the catagory price comparison or mobile phone Pacepowerskill
- That we make this function a category one and move away from the list, at least for nominating sites. For the Features Sites that we do list, maybe we can say what caught our eye? MarkDilley, leave messages here
- I think that this new system (as of 27-Feb-2007) might be addressing these problems/suggestions. By using the {{subst:FeatureMe}}, we're creating a category-like system that's not a massively impersonal list, more over this provides ways for the community to make notes about what they like as well as areas for improvement to potential featured sites. If you feel this system still isn't perfect, please drop another note here. --TakKendrick 19:26, 27 February 2007 (PST)
I just wrote an article on Kdice.com, it is a great site and very addictive. User talk:Westerdal
- Thanks for the update. In response, we featured this article on 26 Dec. --TakKendrick
I cleaned up the entry for RFSHQ.com. Radio F Software 21:49, 5 January 2007 (PST)
It appears there's a bunch of advertisement websites being put up in this list now, like those pages that are meant to Google snipe and offer nothing. Radio F Software 15:46, 11 January 2007 (PST)
- We're trying to figure out how to keep this list cleaned up. I've been trying to weed it out every couple of days, although it has been getting messy. What do people think about MarkDilley's suggestion above?--TakKendrick
- Again, the hope is the new system will take care of this. It's a little harder to do than "add your name to the list" but is still fairly easy to do and reduces people easily adding all their websites en masse or trying to game our featuring mechanism for some SEO purpose. We also provide a carrot in that fixing up article pages makes them richer for Google indexing (not to mention that being a "featured site" probably helps from a number of SEO angles). --TakKendrick 19:26, 27 February 2007 (PST)
Do we have a page where people can nominate really neat sites that may not yet have a well formed AboutUs article? i.e. "it would be great if someone fixed up this page because the website is just too cool". Ray
