SUN, which stands for Stanford University Network, was founded in 1982 by group of graduates from Stanford University consisting of Andy Bechtolsheim, Vinod Khosla, Scott McNealy and Bill Joy. The actual originator of the idea was Andy Bechtolsheim, who designed the first Unix Workstation. He was responsible for the design of the 68000 Unix System. The company trades under the symbol "SUNW" where "W" stands for world-wide. Sun was the first company to promote TCP/IP, which is currently the most widely used protocol on Internet. The company's first big break came in 1983 when it partnered with Computervision to begin their operations in Europe. The company continued to grow, and established a Canadian office in 1985. In 1986 Sun introduced PC-NFS and Asia and Australia Operations. 1988 was a crucial year for the company when its revenues reached a billion dollars, becoming the fastest to reach that mark. Sun opened its first center in France in 1989. Sun introduced its Solaris 2 operating system in 1991, and started its operations in Latin America the same year. Sun introduced the first ever multiprocessing desktop computer, the SPARCstation 10, in 1992. 1995 was another landmark year in its history when it introduced "JAVA", the first universal software platform. In 2001 Sun became an $18.25 billion company with an office in over 165 countries. Sun unveiled its most advanced UNIX operating system, Solaris 10, in the year 2004, also creating world's largest data warehouse. In 2005, the company introduced Sun Fire Servers using CoolThreads Technology, and in 2006 it introduced the world’s first hybrid data server. It's been 25 years since the company was first established and Sun still continues with its quest for innovation and excellence in the field of computing.
