Title
C4: Welcome
Description
In fact the Bible teaches that the answer to this question doesn’t even require reading the Bible. (You have to read the Bible to know who God is as a person, but not to know he exists.) If you start reading the first story of the Bible, the creation story, it doesn’t start with a proof for the existence of God as one might expect, but rather it launches right into God’s work of creation, seeming to take for granted that God exists. (“In the beginning, God created heaven and earth…”). How can the Bible make such a bold assumption? Later on, in another part of the Bible called Romans, it states that we can figure this question out by observing the world around us (Romans 1:20). When you hear someone relate a “spiritual experience” while taking in the magnificent view from a mountain top, or watching a beautiful sunrise, Christians would say that God is communicating something about himself to that person through the world around them.
And if we look deeper into creation through the field of science we see an ordered universe governed by laws and principles that we can study and understand. Christians believe this is yet another way that God has left his fingerprint on the world around us. In many respects there is no greater example of this than our own human makeup. Carl Sagan (1934-96), noted atheist and astronomy professor at Columbia University once said that:
“Even the reception of a single sentence from outer space would force me to conclude that there was an intelligent cause behind it.”
