What (summary)
Enable the watchlist alerts by default, and set the add articles I edit to my watchlist by default & We want the personal pages of new users to be on their watchlist along with their talk pages, and in the watchlist preferences all boxes marked checked by default.
Why this is important
Drives engagement. Keeps reminding people to spend time at our site and lets them know when highly relevant changes occur.

Preferences for all new users include- Add pages I create to my watchlist
- Add pages I edit to my watchlist
- E-mail me when a page I'm watching is changed
- E-mail me when my user talk page is changed
- E-mail me also for minor edits of pages
- For each new user, their talk page and their user page are automatically added to their watchlist as soon as their account is created
