New slogan: "Let's Build Something Together."

Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse is a chain of retail home improvement and appliance stores, founded in 1946 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. They have retail locations in 49 states in the US.

Website

Lowes.com is a tidy website offering information about Lowe's products. The site contains sections for appliances, indoor furnishings, outdoor furnishings, building products, tools, and a project center. The project center does have some helpful advice for home improvers of every kind, including:

  • Buying Guides
    • Tips on choosing the right item.
  • HOWTO guides
    • Step-by-step guides for do-it-yourselfers, from beginner to expert.
  • Interactive design tools
    • A section of interactive design planners and project calculators, for help with home improvement tasks.

The site also has a selection of home decorating ideas. This is a gallery where you can browse innovative and creative designs for every corner of the home.

The HOWTO guides are directed towards the individual home-maker. They are clear, concise directions with illustrations and handy tips, demonstrating concepts such as:

  • Attracting Birds
  • Easy Water Fountain
  • Install a Ceiling Fan
  • Lawn Care Basics
  • Install Landscape Lighting
  • Your Outdoor Kitchen
  • Island Workspace
  • Cabinet Makeover
  • Weatherstripping
  • Lawnmower Ramps
  • Tile a Backsplash
  • Paint Problem Solver

Lowe's also operates a second site: lowescreativeideas.com Here, the focus is much more on inspiration for home decorating. The site is run separately from lowes.com, as it is the home page for "Lowe's Creative Ideas", a magazine produced by Lowe's.

History

The first Lowe's was started as a single neighborhood hardware store located in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina in 1946. The chain has expanded steadily from that time, after merging with Eagle Hardware stores. Lowe's has grown to become the second-largest home improvement retailer, after Home Depot.

Lowe's focus is on a softer, friendlier atmosphere than Home Depot, with more focus on the individual home builder than the professional contractor. They have also kept a focus on a hierarchical structure of organization. Lowe's is organized geographically into divisions such as Southeast, West, Northeast, then regions usually designated with a two-digit number, then areas, districts and finally the individual store.

Future Plans

Lowe's is targeting both Canada and Mexico as the next locations to branch to. They plan to open up to ten stores in Canada by 2008, and open up three to five new stores in Mexico by 2010.

Business profile

Lowe's revenue in 2005 was $43.2 billion. They have 210,000 employees at over 1,400 retail stores. Their Fortune 500 ranking is #42.
