What (summary)
Create a daemon (self running application) that monitors our placement in search engine results for a user configurable list of search terms. Provide some basic reporting and export into excel for more advanced analysis.
Why this is important
A spike version of this utility has been created to measure the impact of the Projects:Common Answers content project. A spike version of this has been created and documented in Create_60+_articles_for_CommonAnswers_(August_16-31)#Measurement.
Should this prove valuable, we would like to have a maintainable version integrated with compost.
DoneDone
The project will be done when ...
- a user (staff member) can initiate measurements that duplicate (or correct?) those acquired by the spike version.
- a page is written explaining who and when people will be adding or removing items from the list of search terms.
Resources
- The perl source for the spike is http://c2.com/~ward/SearchRank/rank.pl
- This version gets tripped up by some stray divs and will fail to notice placements in the 1st place.
