The pilates method of conditioning was invented by Joseph Pilates, a German-born athlete, during World War I, as a way to rehabilitate bed-ridden soldiers. To develop this visionary view of fitness, he drew on his experience as a boxer and gymnast, and studied other forms of exercise, such as yoga and martial arts.
