Galapagos Organic Rescue - a sustainable development & conservation project by CRACYP to save the ecosystem of the Galapagos Islands from introduced, invasive plant species.

Volunteer opportunities in the Galapagos Islands are available with the Galapagos Organic Rescue project. Galapagos Organic Rescue volunteers help remove invasive plant species, such as black raspberry and guava, which are crowding out native, endemic plants. They plant native tree species and organic crops in their place, to prevent the weeds from returning. Galapagos Organic Rescue works on the 3% of the Galapagos Islands' area which is inhabited, farmed or privately owned - it's important to tackle the invasive plants in these areas because otherwise the problem spreads to the National Park as well.

One of the organic crops we are planting is sugar cane, which does not spread and requires no chemicals to cultivate. With the cane, we can make organic alcohol, which we can use as an environmentally-friendly fuel for the project. This will reduce the need for the Galapagos Islands to use fossil fuels (which have to be brought in by tanker, creating yet more risk of spills and contamination).

By rescuing farming land on the Galapagos Islands, we ensure that the farmers have a sustainable, enviromentally-friendly way to make a living in this delicate ecosystem, so they won't need to resort to more damaging activities (such as illegal fishing, for example). Between the small patches of organic crops, we plant native species, to provide habitat for wildlife and ensure that the organic cultivation is sustainable.

Volunteering on the Galapagos Islands is very rewarding and a great way to see the famous wildlife, knowing that your visit has a positive impact. Galapagos Organic Rescue volunteers get to know local people and see a different side of life in the Galapagos Islands. Find out how to apply at the Galapagos Organic Rescue volunteer page.
