After graduating from Gettysburg College with a degree in Psychology (Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa), he was employed by Liberty Mutual Insurance Company as a commercial insurance agent. In 1976 he left the company to start an independent insurance agency known as Bruce Grau & Associates. It was incorporated in 1978 and in 1982 became associated with Frank Russell of Russell Insurance Group. An affiliation known as Grau and Russell Associates was formed to contract with insurance carriers.
