Zoogen Incorporated
Description
Joy Halverson, DVM, founded Zoogen in 1989 in order to provide high quality, DNA testing for companion and zoo collection birds. Dr. Halverson had discovered that the gene ATP Synthase was found on the sex chromosomes of birds and could be used to distinguish avian gender. She then developed an assay for sex determination using only a drop of a bird's blood which was easily collected during routine toenail trimming. This test eliminated the need for invasive surgical sexing. DNA based gender analysis presents no risk to the bird and is accurate at any age. Blood collection is simple; and, sample refrigeration is unnecessary.
In the14 years since its founding, Zoogen has sexed more than 340,000 birds with an accuracy greater than 99.99%. Zoogen's bird sexing technology has evolved from a weeklong process requiring radioactivity to a "state of the art" high throughput, rapid turnaround test that usually provides results within 24 hours from sample receipt.
Our customers include veterinarians, some of the largest zoos and wild animal parks in the country, rescue and conservation groups, large and small scale breeders, and of course the single pet owner who just wants to know if his bird buddy is really "Chico" or "Chiquita".
