Ten years ago, despite a reasonable salary, I was in financial disarray. Chronically in Visa and Student Loan debt, I had little or no savings. Frequent month end panics found me scrambling to put the rent together. Unplanned for expenses like Dental Costs or Car Insurance routinely wiped out my small savings. Post-Christmas Bill Blues were nearly clinical. And as for retirement …. I concluded I’d have to work til I dropped (and what the heck was going on with my mutual funds?!?). It all felt frustrating and impossible, so I kept my head in the sand. Strangely, my periodic escapes to Mexico ultimately made matters worse.
One morning I simply woke up and decided it was time to take charge of my money. I started paying attention to my money, reading and learning all I could. With a few simple habits and about a half hour a week devoted to this area, things started to turn around. At first it was slow going, but within two years I noticed a dramatic difference. In fact, I was able to meet one of my goals, home ownership, in about half the expected time.
This wasn’t rocket science. I was an ordinary person with an ordinary story who managed to get her personal finances sorted out. I haven’t reached all my goals yet, but I’m well on my way. It feels great.
