What differentiates Iyengar yoga from other styles of Hatha yoga is the focus on precision and alignment of the body. Props (blocks, bolster, straps, blankets, etc) may be used to increase the accessibility and proper alignment of the posture(s).

Each asana (posture) is held for sufficient time to enable the practitioner to develop an awareness of the body, which in turn creates and builds a connection to the mind. As one takes on the process of single pointed attention to the body each asana becomes an act of meditation. As the body becomes stronger, more flexible, and balanced the mind too becomes quieter, sharper, and more able to concentrate.

In the beginning you may only be aware of how the physical body is affected by the practice of yoga. Whether you are aware of it or not, the very act of performing asanas on a regular basis effects not only the anatomical body but also the physiological, emotional, psychological and spiritual bodies, creating a sense of wellness and balance throughout your life.
