A Democrat is a member of the Democratic Party, one of the two major political parties operating in the United States. Democrats traditionally stand for a strong public education system, a clean environment, business and corporate regulation, social programs, affordable health care, individual freedom, and government assistance to the poor. Democrats favor government intervention in economics, but not in social aspects of life. On the political spectrum Democrats are considered to be liberal. Republicans have strong ties to big business and corporations. They typically are against any form of government and environmental regulation. They favor cuts on public services, believing that we should rely solely on private enterprise to fill our needs. Though they are often identified as being the party of "small government", they favor extensive government intervention in social aspects of our lives. While they do not favor government aid to the poor, they often support extensive tax-payer bail outs of faltering corporations.
