On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses Grant signed into existence the world's first national park, Yellowstone National Park. The 2.2 million acres of wilderness was " set apart as a public park or pleasuring ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people." Soon, the development of hotels, campsites, restaurants, and other guest amenities within the park attracted not only guests, but thousands of adventurous individuals who chose to work and live in Yellowstone National Park – and call it their home. For this reason, development began on The Yellowstone Co-Op Employee Recreation Program in 1957. The program was designed to serve the employee communities in the park by providing them with recreational activities within Yellowstone’s unique setting. In the spirit of the theme quoted by President Grant, this program adapted the motto “For the benefit and enjoyment of the employee.”
