Description
XCP2 - Copy Protection
XCP2 is content protection software that was used by SONY BMG Music Entertainment on some audio CDs during 2005 in the US. The production of discs incorporating this technology was ceased by SONY BMG in November 2005. XCP2 was designed to help prevent unlimited copying and unauthorized redistribution of the music on the disc. Security concerns were raised regarding the use of CDs containing XCP software in computers. These issues have no effect on the use of these discs in conventional, non-computer-based CD and/or DVD players including car stereos.
These security concerns were focused on the 'cloaking' techniques which were used to enhance protection levels by preventing the DRM files from being easily detected and removed once loaded onto a computer after the End User License Agreement was accepted. While there is no suggestion of malware being contained on the CDs, or any malicious intent in the techniques used, it was suggested that a possible vulnerability with 'cloaking' techniques existed where the cloaked files could be made vulnerable to malicious code which at the time may have escaped detection by anti virus software programs.
Once the security concerns were raised software patches were immediately made available both directly through SONY BMG's own web site and also from anti virus vendors to 'uncloak' the DRM files so that all associated files could be scanned. In addition programs to permanently uninstall the software were made more widely available.
