- Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would become an artist. I always wanted to be one, but poor grades in art classes in school led to the decision that it just wasn't in the cards for me. So I got a nice safe, secure little job in a bank and worked there in the basement for 20 years. Then one magical day in 1983 a friend suggested that we make paper. It had never occurred to me that one could make paper. And, well -- if one did make paper -- what would it look like? Not knowing what it would look like was my saving grace. Since I didn't have anything to compare it to, my paper evolved from my imagination and my censor was silenced. When I found that I could make paper from the plants growing all around me, I became lost in a world of magical delight. I was dangerous as I drove around the countryside looking for more raw material for what had become my obsession. Now twenty years later I feel I have earned the title “artist.”
