- On May 20, 1899, evangelist John A. Stevens held a five-week tent meeting in the Water Valley schoolyard. This was followed by another two-week meeting in the park. At the beginning of the meeting, there were only three members of the Christian Church: Mr. & Mrs. M.F. Jumper and Mrs. Mary Lawson. The First Christian Church of Water Valley was organized during this time, and by the time the meetings closed the church numbered 50 members. Another tent meeting was held in the park in November, 1899, and 48 more members were added to the church.
