Working thesis

  • It is always better to have a working thesis before you develop your actual thesis.
  • A working thesis is different from a thesis in that it may not be a fully formulated claim, but points towards the claim that you will ultimately make. It basically narrows the scope of your research once you have thought of a topic.
  • The difference between a working thesis and a topic is that a topic is a very generalized view of the paper. For example, "Complex interdependence and its effects in the world today" is a topic. "Complex interdependence and its facilitation of transnational terrorist networks post-9/11 by easier proliferation of weapons and human capital" is a working thesis. It is closer to your thesis but still not a claim in itself!
