Title
West Midlands Regional Assembly
Description
Regional government and devolution has become a hot topic since the English devolution process began in 1998. In 2002 the Government published a White Paper "Your Region, Your Choice", which outlined the opportunities for devolution in the English Regions, including the possibility for fully elected regional assemblies.
Currently the West Midlands Regional Assembly is responsible for developing and co-ordinating a strategic vision for improving the quality of life in the region. The Assembly is responsible for setting priorities and delivering regional strategies, including the West Midlands Spatial Strategy.
The areas where the Assembly has specific responsibilities range from business and economic development through to social inclusion, and regional planning through to the environment. These responsibilities are outlined by our regional priorities, and it is the Assembly's job to communicate and deliver regional strategies for each of these areas, and to ensure they are tailored to meet the needs of the West Midlands. These strategies will be developed by our strategic partnerships.
