WingSpan Press - Self Publishing Services
Description
Writers Serving Writers
Why 100% Royalties? Because we were writers first. WingSpan Press was created out of frustration with the traditional publishing industry's focus on sales over quality (e.g. Vanna White and Pam Anderson are best-selling authors...and you're not). And frustration with the catch-22 nature of the agent/publisher loop (ever had an agent tell you 'we only deal with published authors.') Frustration with the loss of control once you do get over those hurdles. And frustration with poor royalties paid on top of poor service to authors.
So we looked into self-publishing - only to find the POD industry overrun with scams, hacks, and even some well-meaning people, who wanted us to pay to have our books published, and still thought they were entitled to 'royalties'.
There are only fees up front, and, if you're not careful, fees on the back end. What POD printers call royalties amount to nothing more than options they retain on your hard work. If you don't sell, it's nothing out of their pocket. But if you work hard, and sell like Harry Potter, the POD publisher gets rich. In the traditional world, the publisher takes a chance on you and puts up the money to publish and distribute your book. If they promote it well, the public pays them for that, and they share that income with you. That's a royalty. With 'royalty'-based POD companies, you pay for the publishing service up front - fair enough - but then you pay again, heavily, every time a book sells.
