Westmead Hospital opened in 1978, with 975 beds, as a Specialised Tertiary Referral Hospital and Level I Trauma Centre for Greater Western Sydney, which has a population of over 2.5 million people and 8 local government areas. The Hospital includes a Dental School, Redbank House, a separate unit for emotionally disturbed children, a stand alone Brain Injury Facility and Careflight Helicopter Retrieval Services.
