I have been working with distributed computing for over 12 years. The technologies I have used have included CORBA, COM/DCOM and EJB.
In 2002, I was commissioned by the Boeing Corporation to evaluate upgrading their computing infrastructure. This also involved migrating the legacy application and proprietary formats to open standards.
Web Services has been on many vendors whitepapers list since 1998. The driving force of Web Services is seamless integration in a heterogeneous environment. Web Services promises much but it is also commercially counter productive to most entrenched vendors to open up their systems. Their rational being why remove a competitive advantage when you already have a large market share.
