Waratah Brass - Newcastle is one of Australia's top ranked A-Grade brass bands, consistently placing highly in Regional, State and National contests. As of late 2005, Waratah is ranked 2nd in Australia, 4th in Australasia, and 62nd in the World (which shows how many extraordinary bands there are in Europe!). Waratah is also one of Australia's oldest continuous brass bands, and indeed one of the oldest in the world, with a history dating back to 1884.
Since the late 1990s, the band has been directed by Ron Prussing, principal trombonist of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and long time brass band player. The band is home to a standard compliment of around 30 musicians from all walks of life - students, plumbers, lawyers, bus drivers, police officers, IT professionals, full-time parents, teachers; you name it, we've got it!
Waratah Brass is also home to a thriving intermediate band. Conducted by Conrad Curry, this band has competed with great success in Open D Grade in the last 12 months since its re-establishment. With members aging between 5 and 50, the Number 2 band is a great place for young and old to come and enjoy making music. Some members are just getting started with music, some have been playing for a while, but just want to enjoy making music without the stress of the A Grade band. And some who do play in the A Grade band play something totally different in the Number 2 band!
