Description
I was raised on the Farm in St. Thomas Indiana. Growing up on a farm taught me the importance of hard work. I graduated from Vincennes/Lincoln High School in 1965. I then went on to Athens College in Alabama to play basketball. Living in Alabama during the peak of the civil rights movement gave me a clear perspective on the importance of the rights of others. I began my career as a Vincennes City Police Officer in 1970, attained the rank of Major - the highest rank allowed by the Vincennes Police Merit System. I retired from the Vincennes Police Dept. in 1999 (after Twenty-nine years and 9 months). I began my term as Mayor of the City of Vincennes Jan. 1 2000.
After almost 30 years of public service to the City of Vincennes, I felt that the city needed new, positive leadership. I ran for mayor in order to provide this leadership. In 1997 I was in a SCUBA diving accident where I was electrocuted and nearly died as I lay there unconscious and sure that I was going to die, I remember pledging that if I were to make it through this I would commit myself to being a better person. I truly feel that every day I am able to wake up and get out of bed is a blessing not to be taken for granted. This is the sentiment that I carry with me everyday - it is a part of who I am. I try to reflect this in every decision that I make.
