Special Olympics is an international organization founded by the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation. There are Special Olympics programs in over 120 different countries! In 1980 British Columbia Special Olympics was established as an accredited chapter of Canadian Special Olympics. British Columbia is divided into a series of Regions - we are one of 9 "locals" that is in Region 6.
B.C. Special Olympics is recognized by the B.C. Government as the only non-profit association dealing specifically with sport, recreation, and fitness for people with mental disabilities.
The vast majority of SOBC funding is from private, corporate and foundation donors, and special events fundraising. Only 4% of its provincial budget is from government.
