Title
Volunteers For Peace International Workcamps and International Voluntary Service
Description
VFP is a Vermont non-profit (501 (c) (3) membership corporation which has been coordinating International Voluntary Service since 1982. We do not have any religious or political affiliation. VFP is an Executive Committee member of the Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service (CCIVS) at UNESCO and works in cooperation with Service Civil International (SCI), the Alliance of European Voluntary Service Organizations, and International Youth Action for Peace (YAP). The history of International Voluntary Service dates back more than 80 years. Our office staff, Board , Advisory Board and thousands of volunteers in the field help facilitate this program. Within the CCIVS network, over 100,000 volunteers are exchanged annually. In 2004, VFP exchanged over 1200 volunteers.
Our services include providing consultation and a placement service for workcamp hosts and volunteers, linking people with programs. Our programs foster international education, voluntary service and friendship. In the last 23 years we have exchanged over 23,000 volunteers in international workcamps world-wide. In the 1980’s, we focused heavily on exchanges across the "Iron Curtain", playing a significant role in that era of citizen diplomacy.
Our original sponsors/funders included "seed money" from the US Information Agency, The Peace Development Fund and the Field Foundation. Our domestic workcamps have been in partnership with the US Forest Service, National Park Service, various affiliates of Americorps, Habitat for Humanity, numerous non-profits and environmental and community action groups. In 2002, VFP received the Daily Point of Light Award from the Points of Light Foundation supported by both Presidents Bush and Clinton. We are a totally membership supported organization.
