Excerpted from the website:

Cornelis Verwoerd (10 Feb 1913 - 19 Dec 2000) was born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. At an early age his family moves to Gouda. After leaving primary school he starts working as an errand boy for a local porcelain and pottery store, and is frequently asked to collect orders from the well known Delftware and pottery factory in Gouda, "Plateelbakkerij Zuid Holland" (PZH). In 1926, at the age of 13, he joins PZH as a painter's apprentice, and remains there until 1932 when most painters loose their jobs due the Great Depression. He then successively works for the Delftware factory "Zenith" in Gouda (ZG), the "Plateelfabriek Schoonhoven" in Schoonhoven (1937), and once more for "Zenith", where he among other things receives his training as a modeler, i.e. a specialist of making plaster models and moulds. By 1939, when he is married, and is drafted for the Dutch army, Verwoerd has mastered all relevant aspects of his profession.
