Description
The Vancouver International Fringe Festival is North America’s most international Fringe Fest and BC’s largest theatre festival. Every year the Fringe delivers an eclectic mix of theatrical offerings consisting of over 500 performances by more than 65 different groups over 11 days. Some of our venues include Vancouver’s best theatres, such as the Granville Island Stage, Performance Works, and the Waterfront Theatre, all situated in the unique setting of Granville Island. The Vancouver International Fringe Festival was voted Vancouver’s Best Arts Festival for five years in a row by Georgia Straight readers.
History
Once upon a time a group of people said “We need to make it easier for folks to make theatre in this town!” They formed the First Vancouver Theatrespace Society (FVTS), embodying the mission “Theatre for Everyone.” From its original loft space in Gastown, FVTS burst onto the scene with several productions, a festival of one-act plays, and an original cabaret. This flurry of activity in its first year and a half of operation inspired FVTS to take the logical step of initiating a Vancouver Fringe Festival. Twenty four years later the Vancouver International Fringe Festival has grown to attract up to 28,000 theatregoers each year. We Are Special
Theatre groups are chosen to participate on a lottery basis, which means that there is no selection process or set of criteria. All you have to do is fill out an application form and get it in on time. Then performances are selected by being pulled out of a hat. This allows for a wide variety of performances to be shown to the public and increases the chances of having something for everyone. We are a registered charitable society (# 11 8919547 RR0001) that gives 100% of the regular box office revenue back to the performers. In keeping with the idea of “Fringe,” there are two venue options for performers. They can apply for a Mainstage Venue, which are supplied by the festival, or they can bring their own venue! These are called BYOVs and have included crazy places such as a in a car, a boat, and a tree. Yipee!
