Description
The UN Millenium project is an independent adviosry body commisioned by the UN Secretary-General to implement the Millenium Development Goals which are designed to eliminate global poverty. These Goals are a set of internationally agreed upon targets for reducing poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women by 2015.
The UN Millennium project origniated in the Millenium Summit in September 2000 where the largest gathering of world leaders in history committed to a new global partnership to reduce extreme poverty and setting out a series of time-bound targets, with a deadline of 2015, that have become known as the Millennium Development Goals.The internationally agreed framework of 8 goals and 18 targets was complemented by 48 technical indicators to measure progress towards the Millennium Development Goals. The UN Millenium project is headed by Professor Jeffrey Sachs and have many celebrity supporters like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Madonna,etc. The advisory body recently presented its report to Investing in Development to the UN Secretary General. The report outlines practical investment strategies and approaches to financing them, and presents an operational framework that will allow even the poorest countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
The UN Millenium Project is currently working on implementing Millenium Development Goals in Africa, dealing with the challenge of rising food prices, planning to make Aid more effective and fueling movements to standup against poverty.
