Rotary began on February 23, 1905 in Chicago, Illinois. Founder Paul Harris, an attorney, sought to recapture in a professional club the spirit of fellowship among businesspeople he remembered from the small town in which he grew up. Harris invited four friends who shared the same ideals formed a service club and met on a rotating basis at each other's places of work --the origins of the name "Rotary".
