The Towton Battlefield Society Homepage

Description

The last battle to be fought on British soil took place over 200 years ago, but anyone exploring our towns and countryside will stumble upon numerous ancient markers and memorials highlighting our history and heritage. These markers and memorials, in the past, have been no protection from development, construction, under investment and apathy. This has left battle site after battle site under the burial mound of a bulldozer.

The battle of Towton in 1461 was the bloodiest battle ever fought on English soil and a pivotal moment during the Wars of the Roses. The battlefield site is one of only a few such sites to retain its historical identity and apart from cultivation, the land and the sites unique places of interest are still intact over 500 years later in a 15th Century time capsule. The Towton Battlefield Society was formed over 10 years ago to preserve and promote the battlefield. The Society is a registered Charity with a very clear mission statement

Over the years, the Society has gone from strength to strength. It has a broad and active membership that meets on a regular basis. The showpiece of the Society is the annual Palm Sunday walk that attracts up to 800 visitors and in recent years, this has included living history camps, military displays, archery displays and presentations from leading Battlefield archaeologists.
