Spanish English Dictionary : Tomísimo

The number of entries in the dictionary has *almost* doubled! Last week the official number of entries was just over 33,000 and now, thanks to the addition of some donated word lists, that number rose to over 59,000. It was a lot of work cleaning up the words and translations. The wordlists were not perfect (and still aren't), but I did my best to weed out the chaff and reformat, rework and correct the entries. I was able to utilize approximately 75% of the content of these wordlists, after removing duplicate entries, entries that were already in the dictionary and incorrect entries. I edited and added gender information to a fair amount the what was left over after the brutal pruning, so the quality of the corpus has not dropped; it has increased because it now is much more complete.

Over the last three weeks I have completely re-written the Tomísimo search code and redesigned the backend database. Before making these changes, a typical search would look through the entire database, record by record, looking for your search term. A search like this could take between 1 and 4 seconds. The redesigned database schema has a searchable index of words and word parts that is then linked to the main database where the entire entry or translation is pulled out and displayed. With the new code and database, a typical search averages between 0.2 and 0.5 seconds. (For the developer types out there, this includes the database query and the page generation.)

Tomísimo is now outfitted with SafeDictionary. SafeDictionary filters explicit words and "bad language" out of the Tomísimo dictionary results. This filter is enabled by default so that the main search at www.tomisimo.org provides family-oriented words and translations. To change this setting, visit the search preferences page. There is a link to the preferences next to the search box as well. This setting lasts only for the duration of your visit (it’s not saved in a cookie on your machine), and on your next visit, SafeDictionary will again be enabled (if you had disabled it) and will block explicit and objectionable language from the search results.
