Description
"Titoi, the man in the maze: The story of Titoi is also the story of every human being, traveling through life as through a maze, taking many turns while growing stronger and wiser as death at the dark center of the maze comes closer. Tracing the light path with your finger you will find one more turn at the end, away from the center. Here we can look back on the trail and find acceptance of the last step."
The story of Titoi (also known as T'itoi, Iitoi, I'itoi, or Elder Brother) is primarily attributed to the Tohono O'odham Native American tribe of the Central Valley in Arizona, but the man in the maze design is also seen in Akimel O'odham, Hopi and Navajo art.
In June 2002, my husband Dean and I drove across country, from Atlanta to San Diego and back. Throughout Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado we continually saw the man in the maze design on all kinds of Native American art and trinkets, including the magnet we bought (left), but all anyone could tell us was "it's the Man in the Maze". Further research online turned up the story of Titoi. It spoke to us of our own journeys- not only the one we were on, driving through the US, but also our lives in general. The Tonoho O'odham link above will take you to a number of similar but different Titoi designs, as well as more information about the Man in the Maze.
