Exercising the right to vote is one of the most powerful tools Americans have to improve their communities and to secure a better future for themselves and their family. Unfortunately, too many Americans do not vote or get involved in the political process. According to the Census Bureau, the number one reason why registered voters did not vote in the past two presidential elections was because they could not get time off from work – that’s nearly four million voters who did not vote in 2000, an election that was decided by 537 votes.
On Election Day many voters already struggling to balance work and family, and especially minority, women, younger and non-unionized hourly workers who often have the most rigid work schedules, are forced to choose between earning a living, raising a family and exercising their right to vote. When faced with that choice, many of them will not vote unless they receive additional support from their employer and the wider community.
Time to Vote is a non-partisan, 501 (c)(3) non-profit initiative working to realize the promise of America’s democracy by ensuring that no voter has to choose between earning a living, raising a family and exercising their right to vote.
