Throwleigh Parish Web Site

Description

The parish of Throwleigh lies on the north eastern fringe of Dartmoor and extends to nearly 3000 acres of which some 40% is uninhabited moorland. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are no main roads or heavily used through routes, but the area is well visited throughout the year notable in season by tourists.

Almost two thirds of the total population of 285 lives in three main housing groups. Throwleigh village (110) Murchington (39) and Wonson/Providence/Forder (35). The other 100 or so dwell either on working farms or in modernised cottages and 20th century residential houses dispersed around the parish.

Until 50 years ago almost all the population was engaged in agriculture and associated trades. There are now fewer active farmers but on larger holdings. A significant number of inhabitants travel to work in Exeter (25 miles) Okehampton (6miles) and Chagford (3 miles) with a few weekending from occupations in London and elsewhere. There is a growing trend of working from home. The parish has an above average retired population but there are perceived to be fewer “second homes” than is the case in other areas around Dartmoor.
