Description
The Aplastic Anaemia Trust was formed from two organisations - the Marrow Environment Fund (MEF) and the Aplastic Anaemia and MDS Support Group.
The MEF was founded in 1985 by the families and friends of children who had died of aplastic anaemia. With their help a specialised unit was established at St. George's Hospital in London which has become the Centre of Excellence for the treatment of aplastic anaemia in the UK. This unit also houses the only research laboratory dedicated solely to studying aplastic anaemia and its allied disorders. Such is the reputation of the unit lead by Professor Gordon-Smith, it is involved either directly or indirectly, by as many as 80% of sufferers.
