The Wesleyan - Hotel, Restaurant & Bar

Description

Our Story

The Wesleyan takes its name from the Wesleyan Chapel a Methodist Church, which once stood on the site. The first Chapel was built in 1839 and was situated in what is now Parkers Motors. It was set back from the road with its front facing The Green. In 1870 it was decided that a larger Chapel was needed, a local and owner and businessman Richard Ward gave over a plot of land on what was to become Chapel Road.

The new Wesleyan Chapel was completed in time for the first service to take place on the 27th September 1871. The Chapel was enlarged in 1909 adding another aisle to one side of the building. By the 1950’s more space was needed and land was acquired further along the Limpsfield Road. Although a temporary structure was built on the site it was not until 1961 that a third Chapel was constructed, now The Warlingham Methodist Church. The last service in the old Wesleyan Chapel was on the 11th December 1961. The building was then sold, demolished and the land left derelict.

Although ‘The Wesleyan’ takes its name from the Wesleyan Chapel, the building itself started life as a two storey flint cottage called ‘Homeville’ built for Richard Ward in 1871. Homeville remained a private residence until 1982 when a local restaurateur bought Homeville and extended the building to accommodate an Italian Style Restaurant, the “Villa Sonia”. The building was further extended in 1991 to add 10 bedrooms and it is this part of the Hotel, which stands on the site of the old Wesleyan Chapel.
