Description

Nestled on 25 acres in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Northern California, the Silver Sage is perhaps the most scenic small horse ranch in the west. We overlook the South Fork of the American River, three miles outside the historic town of Placerville. Riding trails leading from the ranch feature dramatic views of the river, ponds, lakes, and old gold mines. A few short miles up Highway 50 are among the best of the El Dorado County wineries. In town, Placerville boasts unique shops and art galleries, fine small restaurants, historic bed and breakfast inns, and an original old west ambiance.

The Silver Sage is an old-fashioned "Mom and Pop" ranch, where the owners have hands-on involvement with EVERYTHING concerning the horses. Between us, we have nearly 50 years of horse handling experience. We raise horses, we ride horses, we train horses, and we love horses. We are not big, and we don't want to be. We simply try to be the best at what we do – which is turning out stable, well trained trail horses for the western market.

Silver Sage Icelandics are not offered for sale as "riding" horses upon completion of the usual three months, or six months of training. Instead, our adult horses' training and experience is measured in years and trail miles. We do not start our horses young, and we do not consider them finished until they are at least seven or eight years old.
