Title

thepurplebook 2006: the definitive guide to exceptional online shopping

Description

The concept of thepurplebook was born with a simple attempt to purchase an antique music box online. What should have been an uncomplicated web search turned out to be an exercise in frustration, as several hours’ worth of web surfing revealed only seven internet retailers buried deep among the nearly 400 irrelevant and/or outdated search results provided by the search engine.

Confounded by this daunting initial attempt, thepurplebook founder Hillary Mendelsohn realized that the online shopping experience would never live up to its full potential until consumers had an easy means of discovering the best products and stores available. Inspired by various travel guides and Zagat Surveys, she surmised that publishing such a guide to online retailers was the surest way to produce an objective and reliable resource that could be conveniently browsed by experienced web shoppers and novices alike, on-or-off-line.

The company was founded in 2000, much to the delight of Mrs. Mendelsohn’s friends and family, who routinely seek her out for online shopping advice. Named for everybody’s favorite color, thepurplebook aims to tackle the estimated 100,000 e-commerce sites currently available, whittling them down to only the best two-percent. The first, 2004 edition of thepurplebook reached stores on 14 October, 2003 and the company looks forward to future annual editions, each of which will maintain an unbiased approach, with the hope that a fair, competitive marketplace will best serve both retailers and shoppers for years to come.
