Pirate Radio - Yarr!

Description

About What is Pirate Radio? A question asked by many, and rarely answered. Why, you ask? Um, well...we don't really know.

James's View

Pirate Radio started during the summer of 2003. Me, Nathan and Joe were good friends and found that, when we got together loads of funny was made. This was the beginning. Matt Light and I were talking in Maths classes, sitting next to each other wasn't on the top of our agenda but when we did, the comic inspiration expired out of us like water from a highly incubated cucumber being driven through a marmot. Anyway, I think the idea of the whole thing being a radio show was when I was talking with Matt about being a radio host. I had thoughts about it before, but when I talked about it with Matt, it became a funny thing. We involved Matt as a Pirate weather forcaster. At the time, we didn't even realise the potential but as time moved on, the weather forcaster joke began to grow.

I can’t remember all of it, and I wish I could because it’s interesting for me to muse about it. If I could go back to those days of not doing my science courcework and constantly being moved by Miss Block I would. I wouldn’t trade those years for the world… Well maybe the world… Or even gold…Anyway, Pirate Radio was formed, origionally it was just a bit of fun to tell our friends, but it didn’t really work, we wanted people to be able to see all of our creative useless talents. It was around this time I saw final dawn, a site made by Joe for the use of a Mod of Ut 2003/2004. I was interested and wanted to make a site myself, but couldnt think what, then Pirate Radio called out to me, and it began. In the old days of early 2004 I made the site and put it up as a subsite of Final Dawn. It was ok, but it was unfinished and needed a rightful polish, so I persuaded Joe to make a site, but that wasn’t it, we payed for the actual web address also. Then the php came into action and the Pirate Radio you see today was born. So, “You havent answered what Pirate Radio is about” I hear you cry. Well, to tell you the truth, Im still searching for a reason, it’s just a piece of random junk with its own corner on the Internet, but that’s why I love it. Who needs a reason to have a laugh?

Joe's view

Pirate Radio is made up by a group of insane, crazy, random 16 year olds from a little place called Chandlers Ford, which is near Eastleigh, which is near Southampton, which is in the south of England, which is in Europe, which is on Earth, which is..yeah, you get the idea. PR started in a particularly boring lesson at school. Probably science, they're very boring. Even more than the rest. I'd rate it at a 8.3 on the bordedish scale. As usual, James was being weird, and making some random rubbish. For some reason, James said Matt was a pirate. We don't remember why. I'm sure it was very deep and meaningful at the time. It went something like this.

James: Hi, and welcome to Pirate Radio. Matt : Yarr!! James: Er, when I said Pirate Radio, I didn't actually mean pirates, I meant illegal radio...

Or similar to that anyway. He then wrote out a whole script, and even funny ads to put in. As we went through more boring lessons, we all came up with more strange, random rubbish. And we thought it was funny. So did some other people. James made more jokes about Matt, and Matt wasn't really sure if they were jokes or insults, but he went along with it anyway. We went on for a year making up stuff, just happy that a few people at school thought it was good (Even though most just looked at us funny, told us they hate us, and walked off). But we weren't happy with just telling friends at school our strange jokes, we wanted to spread it to the world! THE WORLD! At this point I was a bit reluctant to help, just thinking a lot of it was just plain weird and stupid. But James kept pestering me to help him, so I gave him some space on another site of mine to shut him up. So he threw together a site, and put up some half finished stuff. Then there was just funny quotes, profiles of us, and a lot of coming soon pages. He then added a few songs, and kept pestering me to do more stuff. I finally gave in and put together a nicer looking website, and also made some comics and stuff. Eventually we decided to get our own name on the 'net - www.thepirateradio.com...you knew that already, since you're there now, I guess...

I got annoyed with doing the complicated and time consuming JLT comics - James hand drew them, and I colored and shaded them on the computer. This took me about half an hour to do one frame (I'm a bit of a perfectionist with that sorta stuff, have to do things the hard way) so I got bored of that after about 4 frames. So I came up with the idea of making some random other comics, that were just about stuff in general. James liked the idea, so he got me to do some simple character sketches of us on the computer, then we decided to use the simple characters because we were too lazy to make anything better looking. So we made 3 comics in one day with the simple characters, and we thought they were pretty funny. Here's a selection of the comments we got when we showed them to people online -

"LOL That's funny!" "...What the hell?" "I don't get it..." "That's so funny it made me choke on my pizza"

So a bit of a mixed reaction. But, encouraged by the good comments, and ignoring the bad comments, we continued releasing comics every week. Me and James also started to get into Flash animation. I got hold of the program to make flash, and sent it to James. But the program annoyed me so I gave up after an hour. James kept going though, and has made a few funny animations about stuff.

We ended up having so much random rubbish that didn't fit in anywhere though. So we added the "RADNOM" section. It's not a typo, honest. And a year or so later, we still haven't done anything with the original scripts. One day we'll record them. Or make an animation of it. One day... So, what are we? Crazy. A bunch of crazy teenagers from england. And we're spreading our crazyness to the world!
