Title

The Lobster Pot Restaurant, Ballsbridge, Dublin 9, Ireland

Description

The Surrounding Area - Ballsbridge

Ballsbridge was the final home of the legendary novelist and playwright Brendan Behan (1923-1964), who wrote The Quare Fellow and Borstal Boy. Behan, sadly, produced a shockingly small body of work, a fact that most put down to his love of drink. He became well-known in later years for his drunken performances at productions of his own plays, and during television interviews. To his wife Beatrice he said, "Success is damn near killing me. If I had my way, I should prescribe that success should go to every man for a month; then he should be given a pension and forgotten."

A mere stroll from the Restaurant is Dublin's famous Herbert Park, the venue for the great exhibition in 1907, where after five years preparation all the countries of the then British Empire were represented. The park is named after Sydney Herbert, father of the Earl of Pembroke, who donated the park to the citizens of Dublin city in 1903. There are some very enjoyable walk-ways through the Park, by the pleasant pond, the extensive lawn areas and the well groomed flower beds.

Football and Rugby fans may be interested in knowing that Lansdowne Road Stadium is 5 minutes walk from the Restaurant. The rather dated ground generates one of the best atmospheres of any sports stadium, despite the fact it is on its last legs. The ground is due to be replaced by an 80,000 capacity stadium in the west of Dublin in 2005.
