Jack B. Winters opened the Chess House in 1972, just in time for the world championship Fisher-Spassky match. He sold the business to Don Oswald in 1979. Jack owned and operated the Chess House at 39th & Main and 74th & Broadway for seven years. He was once the highest rated player (USCF) in Missouri, and on one occasion played world chess champion, Bobby Fisher, to a draw.
Jack "J.B." Bailey Winters, 63, Garden City, MO, passed away March 11, 2003, at his home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at Underwood Steinbeck Funeral Home, Butler, MO (660) 679-3121. Rev. Fred Winters will officiate. Interment in Click Cemetery, Nevada, MO. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Contributions to Archie Baptist Church or American Lung Assn. Jack owned and operated the Chess House at 39th & Main and 74th & Broadway for seven years. He was once the highest rated player (USCF) in Missouri, and on one occasion played world chess champion, Bobby Fisher, to a draw. He bought and renovated numerous buildings in KC over the years, including a historic 1903 apartment building on Armour Blvd. Survived by his wife, Mary of Warrensburg, MO, seven children and spouses, seven grandchildren and three sisters and spouses. IN REMEMBRANCE: Donald Lynn Oswald was born January 12, 1934 at Ottawa, Kansas. He grew up in Princeton and attended Princeton schools, graduating from Princeton High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1957.
