Description

The Anchor Store is owned and operated by Roy and Janet Chilson. Although not from a family of famous Admirals, Roy and Janet come from the stock that forms the basis of the mightiest Navy in the world. In addition to the several sailors discussed below there are many more aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews that have served and continue to serve in our nation's Navy.

Roy Chilson entered the Navy in 1974 as a Seaman Recruit and broke family tradition by going to boot camp in Orlando, Florida. His father, Irv Bishop Sr. had trained in Great Lakes, followed by four of his brothers, Chuck Chilson, Ralph Bishop, Irv Jr., and Paul Bishop. One of his sisters, Dee Chilson, was a WAVE and did her boot camp in Maryland. Dad spent most of his time on Guam and told stories of guarding Japanese prisoners, suffering from "jungle rot", and hijacking jeeps full of Budweiser. With these exciting stories in mind, they all followed his footsteps.

Chuck was the first son to enlist and did his first tour on the USS Randolph. After tours in Georgia, Puerto Rico, Virginia, and a couple of tours mixed in aboard the Ike, he retired with 24 years of service as an ACCS in 1989. Not to be outdone sister Dee enlisted and while stationed in Bainbridge Maryland, met her husband, Guy Huckins, a Navy SeaBee. Dee got out, made babies, and worried as a Navy wife while Guy did three tours in Vietnam. Guy retired with 20 years. When Chuck returned from the Randolph with his exciting stories of exotic ports of call, Ralph enlisted, became a Boatswain's Mate and was soon stationed aboard the USS New Jersey sitting off the coast of Vietnam. Irv Jr. was next and joined the Navy Reserves while still in high school. Upon graduation in 1969 he became active and found himself a Quartermaster aboard the USS Kittyhawk, he too, went to Vietnam.
