Description

About THEnet

Managed by the University of Texas System Office of Telecommunication Services (OTS), the Texas Higher Education Network (THEnet) is a subscriber service that provides Internet and Internet2 access to education, research and health care institutions in Texas.

OTS offers IP-based network services to THEnet subscribers via the UT System Network (UTSN), a high-performance backbone network that provides advanced networking capabilities to UT System universities and health institutions across the state in support of their strategic missions of education, research, health care, and public service.

THEnet Beginnings

The history of THEnet begins in 1986 when the UT System installed its first Cray supercomputer in Austin. In order to provide access to the supercomputer to UT System institutions, OTS installed DEC computers and leased circuits to create the UT System statewide network, or UTSN. In late 1980s under auspices of the National Science Foundation's NSFnet program, OTS was able to offer IP network access to other educational, research, and public service institutions in Texas. This new service was named the Texas Higher Education Network, or THEnet. Through the years, subscribers to the service have included universities, colleges, community colleges, public and private K-12 schools, libraries, museums, health care organizations, research institutions, and local-, county-, district-, state-, and federal-government agencies.
